The nurse left work at five o'clock. She was tired, tired of standing on her feet all day, tired of the idiot doctors, just…tired.

"Damnit!" She cursed when the heel of her sensible shoes got caught in a crack in the sidewalk. She fell, nearly breaking her neck. She kneeled there, on the cold, hard pavement, clutching her twisted ankle.  Nobody stopped to help the fallen nurse. Everyone, much too busy to care about the lady in white.

It was a rather thankless job; the nurse mused as she picked herself up and dusted off her white uniform before limping towards her car. She worked all day to care for the sick and the frail, but no one paid her any mind. And why should they care? She was just a nurse, not an ever important doctor.

It was a rather thankless job…

The nurse drove home in silence, not bothering to turn on the radio. It was not long before it began to rain. Soon the roads became slick and dangerous, but the nurse was careful.

Suddenly, there was a screech and a blaring horn! Someone had zoomed past the nurse, cutting her off so suddenly that she stomped on the brakes, swerving when the brakes failed on the slick tar. She made it to the side of the road, her heart thumping in her ribcage. She turned off the engine and leaned on the steering wheel, and as she sat there, hunched over her steering wheel in shock, not one person stopped to help the nurse.

The nurse sat there for a few more minutes before turning on her little car and continuing on her way home. She hadn't expected anyone to stop for her. They never did.

The nurse opened the door to her apartment, the cat scampering out of her way. She limped into the living room and sat on the couch, examining her ankle.
"It's not that bad…" She murmured to no one. The nurse lived alone and the cat didn't care about her ankle. The nurse leaned back and sighed. She had no one, no one really cared…except…

The nurse thought to earlier that day. The little girl that had smiled so sweetly, the little girl that only had a few months to live, the little girl with such warmth in her eyes despite everything…or perhaps because of everything.

"Well, there is that." The nurse smiled slightly before lying on the couch, her hands behind her head. "There is that…"

Maybe it wasn't such a thankless job after all.
So, this is a little something I wrote in creative writing. Actually, it was the first thing I had ever written in that class. The first sentance was the prompt, in case you were wondering.

very targeted in its point, i especially like the fact that the nurse has no name and the fact that she finds a sadness in so many things that when something good affects her she immediately takes note and this moment is well emphasized in your writing. it would probably make a good longer piece too; the relationship with the nurse and the little girl, maybe the little girl helping the nurse to treasure her life a bit more? Enjoy your creative writing :)
